I fixed twitter!
The other day I logged into two of my favorite twitter tools to get a VERY sad message. It seems twitter has made services that allow you to auto select people to follow remove that feature, and my two favorite tools, Twitter Karma and Flashtweet don't work as well now!
Both of these tools have semi automated features where you can load a list of users with click boxes next to them, and then select who you want to follow or unfollow. they both also had selection to "select all" and thus automating the following people back, or automatically following targets twitter users. Here is a sample of twitter karma
So, I was a bit annoyed, and when your sorting through 1000's of twitter users, it can become VERY time consuming. soI needed to find a better way! and I did!
I downloaded this add-on for firefox, it's called "checkboxmate" here is the official Mozilla add-on page, this is important that it's an official add-on, it means it doesn't contain viruses or malware, and will work in all versions of Firefox. Here is the download link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9740
Now after you have added this on, and restarted Firefox, you are ready to use twitter automatically again!
here is a video of the the add-on being used with flashtweet, the first thing I do is zoom out on the page, the short cut for this in Firefox is [ctrl]+[-] then I auto selct all the accounts I want to follow. also, at the end to resize your browser back to defaul, just hit [ctrl]+[0] (that's a zero)
here is the vide of using this add-on with flashtweet to auto follow 100 people in a few second:
here is the video on my photobucket
BTW, I love flashtweet, it's inexpensive, it's only 6.95 a month, and you get 14 days free to try it out, and I have to say it's worth it's weight in gold, and can be used to follow 100's of people in a few minutes, and is one of the tools I use to rapidly grow twitter accounts, here is a link to get 14 days free.
I hope this helps everyone!
I’m back!
I had to take break from my blog, I had some pretty big things going on in life. Around early December a huge rush of orders came in, and I had to make them, it was a super rush, but fun! Then I had some personal things come up, (I'm now single, ladies) and long story short, here I am, and I have came up with a new focus for the blog.
what I enjoy writing about and talking about is business, specifically small businesses, so I'm focusing on the answers to a few vital open ended questions, that I'm actually learning the answers to everyday.
here are a few of them:
which is better, to be talented, or be marketable?
what will sell?
how do i sell this?
how do I make my business better?
how do I make money/make more money/save money?
can I be a full time crafter or artist?
does being an artist really mean I need to be starving?
I have written up a few posts ahead of time, and will also be doing some interviews for the site (if your interested send me a message)
but anyway, comment me if you like this new concept, and I'll be back in a day or so with a new post
My Relevancy Poll
hello, I'm doing a quick poll about the new relevancy search on etsy, I want to see if people saw an increase in traffic with the new etsy searching method.
How to fool the new etsy relevancy search.
The logic that Etsy uses for their new relevancy is as follows: If an item has a tag, and uses the tag in the description, and been able to figure out how to fool the et then again in the title, this item is relevant to that word. That sounds great, and it is, but I've already but I'll tell you how to fool the Etsy search.
-
tag and item with irrelevant tags to the item
-
repeat the tags in the description, you can try to hide this but weaving them into some sort of story or what ever, but you can also just make a list
-
add the words to the title of your item, you just do a list, so if you name the item "orange hat with tassles" and then add all your tags in the item title.
-
Then add your tags to the materials the item uses
- you may have to wait for the search and database to refresh, this can take between 30 minutes and an hour.
-
You may wish to add this list of words to your shop description, just for a little extra credit.
Wasn't that easy?
(you shouldn't actually do any of that, it's wrong, but it WILL be done)
The point of giving this information is, etsy refuses to enforce the rules of their site now, and I doubt they ever will. so until they get serious about that, the searches on they're site will not work. It's simple as that. The simple solution to making searches better is not to make them more complicated, but to actually enforce they rules.
Relevancy searches on Etsy, and why it’s a dumb idea.
A couple days back, Etsy announced they where going to change the search the use to a “relevancy” search every Thursday. This on the surface sounds like a great idea, and it actually is a great idea. Right now if you search on Etsy for “mittens” your going to up getting a few mittens, but a lot of scarfs and a few sweaters. Which are called irrelevant search results, because they don't have anything to do with the search query, which is what the user types into the search box. But the problem is, relevancy search will NEVER work on etsy, for a few reasons:
-
Relevancy searches aren't used anymore, and haven't really been used in nearly a decade. Most people think that sites like bing and Google use the content of a page to determine the placement on Google searches. This is mostly false. Google was the first search engine to use a type of search that doesn't really look at the content of a page, but looks at the number of other pages linking to it. So if a web page is about horses, and a ton of other websites about horses link to it, then Google thinks “hey this site must be about horses”
-
The old relevancy searches where very easy to manipulate and fool, for instance, if I made a website about cats, but tagged it with horse related terms, it would show up in searches for horses. This might sound stupid. But imagine a site selling clothes for teenage girls, that would show up in searches for Lindsey Lohan or Brittany spears. So tricking searches could be profitable. The common tricks where “meta-tag stuffing” which would be giving a site improper tags (that never happens on Etsy right?) or repeating words on the bottom of pages or in the code of the site, searches used to use the logic “if a web-page says horse 1000 times, it must really be about horses!” So if the page says horse 10 times, but in the code says horse 900 times, the search can be fooled easily.
-
Relevancy searches require more technical knowledge for sellers to use than the current Etsy system. If you thought tagging was hard, wait until you have to do relevant tagging
-
Etsy can't enforce they're current rules of the site, and they are trying to make it so miss-tagging can occur and still result in good search results.
-
Relevancy searches WILL by slower, the server that handles the searches will now not just do searches of a database, but will now have to search multiple databases, and preform calculations before returning a result.
-
The relevancy searches very well may not be fair, the actual algorithm used by Etsy has not been revealed, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will factor in other items in the sellers shop, so if your entire shop has 100 mittens, and someone searches mittens, you may fair better than a new seller with only 5 mittens in their shop. Which will make it hard for the little guy.
The real problem with etsy's searches is that they for some reason refuses to enforce the rules on tagging. If they simply enforced the rules, the search would work pretty well. Sites like Google developed they're advanced searches that are used today because they had no control over the content of the internet, but Etsy does have control over the content of their own site. So until they sack up and start enforcing the rules, it will never get any better.
Welcome back!
hello there,
Sorry for not posting in a while, I was super busy making rings, and working on my new site, and just didn't have time for the blog, BUT I will now!
I am going to refine the focus of the blog a bit, and make it a bit more focused and useful. but for today I have two new blog posts

Natural Brass? Natural Bullshit!
There seems to be a rash of people contacting other people on Etsy contacting other sellers claiming they are violating trademarks and copyrights. So I wanted to answer some myths and about trade marks and copyrights.
First a trademark is, according to Wikipedia, “a distinctive sign or indicator used by an individual, business organization, or other legal entity to identify that the products or services to consumers with which the trademark appears originate from a unique source, and to distinguish its products or services from those of other entities.”
So two words put together can be a trademark, especially if they are not related words, or a commonly used phrase For example, I couldn't trade mark “lamp shade” but if I made a square lamp and wanted to call it “lamp box” I probably could. Furthermore, that trademark only really applies to my field, so if someone wanted to come along and make a car and call it a “lamp box”
If someone contacts you claiming your violating their copyright there are a few things you need to do before you even consider it a legitimate problem. First you need to ensure they actually have a trademark, some some odd reason people think slapping a trade mark or copyright sign next to something means it is trademarked. This is not true, a trademark is a specific legal document, and can be searched using a trademark search (a lawyer can do this) and they cost a few hundred dollars to register. Also, usually a cease and desist letter is not an e-mail. In most jurisdictions a “cease and desist letter” needs to be a registered letter, usually sent by a lawyer.
So if you one day you get a registered letter from lawyer and it contains the copy of a trademark and the terms of the trademark, you might have something to worry about. If you get a convo on etsy, claiming someone has a trademark, I'd request some more documentation.
It's also illegal to claim you have a trademark, copyright or patent on something when you don't, and if someone claims to be a lawyer, ask for their BAR ID number and make sure they are really a lawyer, it's illegal to impersonate a lawyer.
I would like to also settle the “Natural Brass” dispute once and for all. I have in my hand the tool engineers handbook, First edition, printed in 1949 by “The American Society of Tool Engineers”, on page 1780 (it's a thick book) they describe in depth the mechanical properties of “Natural Brass” they even defined it as about 30 percent zinc and the bulk copper.
Why this is important is “natural brass” is a common term in both engineering and jewelry making, it would be like trying to claim I trademarked stainless steel.
So if you get any e-mails from people claiming to own a trademark, make sure they actually have a trademark, and sometimes it good to talk to a lawyer, many lawyers will break down time into small blocks, my patent lawyer will bill in 5 minute increments if you just have a question for him.
I hope this helps, let me know if anyone has ever claimed to own a trademark you use.
My long Awaited Ad-Spot Give Away
I just added an ad to the side of my website, and will be adding another one right below it. The ad right below it will available, but only for winning on a contest. The ad will be in a high visibility spot on a blog that gets a ton of views. The ad will stay up for at least a week, and can link to pretty much anything that isn't terribly offensive.
So here is the contest!
There are 3 (easy) things you need to do to win the spot
- Follow my twitter account twitter.com/handmadebattle if you haven't already
- Tweet this, exactly “@handmadebattle I just entered to win free ad space! http://cli.gs/69Gar1 ”
- leave a comment on this post, with one thing you've done all year to improve your business, no matter how small! I may choose a runner up based just on this alone
I will stop the contest on Friday and pick the winner. The ad needs to be less than 188x188 pixels. This contest will be the pilot for future contests that will give away more ad space, consulting, and some products like rings and give certificates. I will contact the winner for info on the ad.
Good advertising and Bad Advertising
I hear a lot of advertising ideas thrown around on Etsy and other business forums, so I wanted to outline some of the best and worst forms of advertising I've seen thrown around, and some ideas about them
Etsy renewing:
Etsy renewing is when you go to the expired listing page on Etsy and check renew, this costs 20 cents per item. This will bring your item back up the top of any category it's in, thus making it number one on the Etsy searches, until of-course someone else renews or lists an item in that category. This is the most basic and common type of advertising on Etsy, it can be highly effective, but only if your tagging is set up right. But if you don't utilize your tags properly, or your trying to target fast moving categories, you might be wasting those 20 cents!
Gift guides:
gift guides are a free type of adverting, they are picked by Etsy staff to feature, when an item makes the gift guide they have the chance of being on the front page, and also in the gift guides section http://www.etsy.com/gift-guides/
again, it's free, so in that sense it's really great. But it's not something you can really try for, there is also a great debate over favoritism in the gift guides, in my experience some people do seem to live in the gift guides.
showcase:
an Etsy show case is paid adverting, it cost 15 dollars for the main showcase, which is accessed from a rather drab looking link on the homepage of Etsy, and the sub showcases are 7 dollars and are accessed from a drop down on the main showcase page. Both showcases only last a day. I have bought a few of them, and I never found them effective at all, especially if you consider that for 15 dollars you can renew 75 items, which I think is much more effective.
The front page of Etsy:
front pages on Etsy are treasuries, selected by Etsy users, that are selected by admin to make the front page. This is also free, and is very effective, When an item is on the front page it's there for about 30 minutes, this is great advertising, but is also unreliable since it's selected by other people and admin. When on the front page an item can get between 100 and 1000 views depending on time of day and how well the item stands out.
There is a lot of talk about favoritism on the front page, but I think that the front page of Etsy is more a case of synchronicity than favoritism. Let's say an item is on the front page, people will see it and maybe not buy it, but hart it or favorite it. So then when they go to make their treasury's they will go through their harts, and possibly select that item that was already on the front page, and then it happens over and over again.
A few tips to get on the front page:
have a lot of Etsy friends, they make the treasuries, and if your in more treasuries, your more likely to be on the front pages.
Make treasuries yourself, if a treasury you make is on the front page, your shop's name will be on the front page, this can be decent advertising.
Be on a Etsy team: Etsy team members will often select other team members for their treasuries
A little trick:
If you are an alternate on the front page, you can knock an item off the front page by buying it, I one time was in line to be on the front page and saw there was a cheap bar of soap on the front page, so I bought it, paid for it, and got on the front page, but if you “buy an item” and don't pay for it to get on the front page, you are the worst kind of person.
One important note:
All the above types of advertising, are only advertising to Etsy users, so they are only so effective, the following types of advertising speak to people outside of the Etsy community.
Advertising on a blog:
Review blogs:
These blogs work like this, the blogger contacts you and offers to write a review on there blog about your product, all you have to do is mail them the product for free. There are also some blog that will give the item away as a giveaway, which can increase the items profile, or will pay for it but at a discount, maybe they'll pay 50 percent. It's also important to note, not all of the reviews on these blogs are favorable, so that could hurt you!
Paid ads:
paid ads are another great way to get advertising, but you need to make sure that the blog is the right fit for you and targets your market well, for instance a blog about body building might be a bad fit for a maker of baby hats, but a new mother blog might be a better fit! Just use some common sense!
A note on blogs:
They can actually be a great deal, or a complete waste. A well made and well promoted blog is the only kind of blog worth dealing with. If the blog doesn't get any traffic, doesn't have credibility or is poorly written, it won't be able to properly promote your brand. It can be hard to assess the credibility of a blog, but some good indications are the regularity and consistency of posts, and also the amount of comments from unique visitors. Sometimes blog owners will comment their own blogs more than other people, look out for that, if a post says it has 20 comments, but 15 of them are from the blog owner, it really only has 5 comments.
A funny story:
I once had a younger girl contact me, she wanted me to mail her a 2000 dollar diamond ring, and she would wear it on her my-space, and she had a few hundred friends on my-space, and they all liked her a lot, so she was sure I'd get tons of sales from her friends, since all of their parents had a lot of money (most of her friends where about 15) I humbly declined. But I gave her an A for effort!
There are plenty of other types of advertising, if you know one, post it in comments!
I’m either REALLY popular, or Twitter is paying off!
So I was playing with good analytics, and playing with some tools to analyze twitter and I happened to notice my google anylitics page and was a little amazed!
My main form of advertising for the blog is twitter, so apparently I'm getting great results! gobs of traffic, people are sticking around a while, and my bounce rate is super low, success!
I'll be writing a lot about twitter and how to use it (properly!) to promote your site.
